Prof. Abdul Rahman entrenching due process in FULafia

|By Paulinus Auta
In his effort to make the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) one of the best five in Africa, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Shehu Abdul Rahman, insists that due process must be strictly adhered to in all affairs of the University.
Due process implies that University business, policies and programmes must be carried out transparently and efficiently, without sentiment of any kind
It also suggests that staff and students of the University must act according to established laws and standard in the course of discharging their duties.
Abdul Rahman is therefore, of the view that the strength and success of the institution will, largely, depend on how rules, principles and procedures that have been established in the system will be enforced.
To make good his intentions, Abdul Rahman took the first step by strengthening the bursary and audit departments of the University to make them function efficiently, in line with his new vision for the institution.
He directed the audit unit to ensure that all financial transaction are properly scrutinised and all offices of the University complied with the audit principles.
The vice-chancellor has also inaugurated a number of committees to enforce due process, transparency and accountability in especially the financial system.
Some of the committees established by Abdul Rahman include:
Procurement Planning Committee, Vice-Chancellor’s Financial Advisory Committee (V-CFAC),
Anti-corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) and the Students Integrity Club.
The Procurement Planning Committee was constituted to ensure that the University “abides by the Procurement Act in order to promote cost effectiveness, transparency and accountability in all its procurement planning activities.”
The Vice-Chancellor’s Financial Advisory Committee (V-CFAC), is there to ensure effective and efficient management of resources and promote strong and robust financial management system in the University.
The vice-chancellor has also inaugurated the Anti-corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) to fight against financial and administrative malfeasances and examination malpractices.
The committee is charged with the responsibilities to check plagiarism, admission and job racketeering, ensure staff punctuality and good attitude to work.
This committee is also expected to educate staff and students on corruption related matters with a view to eliminating the scourge in FULafia.
The Students Integrity Club is also in place to promote integrity and hard work among the students.
It is, therefore, expected that with these measures put in place, and with the support of the entire University Community, the culture of due process, entrenched by the administration of Abdul Rahman in FULafia, has come to stay and, ultimately, play a significant role in the process of positioning the University for global competitiveness.
