Our History

Brief history

The world economy is changing as knowledge supplants physical capital as the source of present and future wealth. According to the World Bank and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Task Force on higher Education in Developing Countries, technology is driving much of this process, with information technology, biotechnology, and other innovations leading to remarkable changes in the way we live and work.
As knowledge becomes more important, so does higher education. Countries need to educate more of their young people to a higher standard -a degree is now a basic qualification for many skilled jobs. These standards must be based on-the implications of globalisation and rapid technology changes on teaching, learning, research, and administration in higher education.
The Federal Government of Nigeria in its choice to establish the Federal University Lafia understands that the global market economy driven by increasing demand for higher education is a powerful tool for developing and sustaining a healthy nation. The University shall leverage on current and future technological innovations to reshape the traditional higher education enterprise while maintaining the core values and traditions of a University.
The Federal University Lafia and the other eight federal Universities established by the Federal Government of Nigeria in 2011 are its response to the need for rapid socio-economic transformation as well as addressing issues of access and equity.
The Federal University Lafia shall be a world class institution of higher learning that shall attract and prepare intelligent, dedicated, and talented young men and women from diverse backgrounds within Nasarawa State, Nigeria and beyond to become critical thinkers who are well-rounded in their field of study. The University shall provide them with the knowledge to compete effectively with their peers locally and globally while adding value to Nigeria's economy.
The Federal University Lafia commenced academic activities on a take-off site on Obi Road, Lafia at the erstwhile State Secretariat Complex donated by the Nasarawa State Government. There were enough buildings and structures on the site that served as offices and classrooms, existing structures were renovated, and more structures were put in place before the commencement of academic activities.
University began moving to its permanent site in 2015, which is on 206 hectares of land along the Lafia Makurdi Road in Lafia provided by the Nasarawa State Government. By 2018. the central administration and all faculties, except two, had moved to the permanent site of the University. The address of the University is: Federal University Lafia P.M.B. 146, Lafia Nasarawa State Nigeria.
On June 20, 2019, the name of the University was changed to Federal University of Lafia by the Governing Council. The correction was based on the Gazette of Federal University Lafia (Establishment) Act 2015 which amended the name of the University.
