Gov Sule Attends Grand Finale of FULafia Inter-Faculty Games

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State, on Friday, attended the grand finale of the 10th edition of the Federal University of Lafia Inter-Faculty Games held at the Sports Complex of the University.
The Governor was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Nasarawa State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Dr. Ibrahim Adamu Alhassan, who was accompanied to the event by Directors of the Ministry.
The closing ceremony of the Games was a showcase of athletic prowess and sportsmanship among ten of the participating University’s Faculties, particularly as the Faculty of Social Sciences Men’s team came from a goal down to draw 1-1 against Faculty of Sciences, taking the game to penalty shootout session where they won 5-4, to clinch the gold medal in the football event, while raw talents were on display in the athletics event.
The Governor commended the University authority for organizing the Games, emphasizing the importance of sports in fostering unity, discipline and healthy competition among youth.
“Congratulations to all the participating Faculties. For me, there are neither winners nor losers in the Games – we are all winners because that’s what sports entail.
“I truly admire the spirit of sportsmanship demonstrated by all the participants as it went beyond the student’s body, transcending to the lecturers and even the professors who have been supporting their darling Faculties.
“I wish to appreciate the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Shehu Abdulrahman, and the Management and students of the Institution for collaborating to make this Event a huge success.
“The Government, through the Directors who are here with me, have spotted some exceptional talents, and will do the needful in the nearest time to further help nurture their talents for global podium appearances.
“On behalf of my principal, the Executive Governor of Nasarawa, His Excellency, Engr. Abdullahi Sule, I thank you all for your support and collaboration with the Government of the day, and we wish to sustain this bond for our collective mutual benefits.”
Speaking earlier, Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Shehu Abdulrahman, praised the spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship among the participating Faculties, disclosing that it was a memorable and exciting atmosphere, pledging to continue to support the growth and development of sports in the University to position the Institution in the best perspective in regional, national and continental inter-university sporting meets.
The grand finale was marked by an award and prize presentation ceremony, where outstanding athletes and Faculties were recognised for their achievements.
The Governor presented the Champions’ Trophy to the overall winners, the Faculty of Social Sciences, encouraging them and other participating Faculties to continue striving for excellence in their academic and athletic pursuits.
The Federal University Inter-Faculty Games is an annual event that aims to promote sports development, healthy lifestyles, and campus unity among students and staff.
At the end of the Games, Faculty of Social Sciences emerged overall winners, with a total of eleven medals, comprising Six Gold, Three Silver, and Two Bronze, respectively.
Faculty of Computing came 2nd overall position, with Three Gold, Four Silver, and Two Bronze Medals, while Faculty of Sciences, came 3rd with a total of Two Gold, Four Silver, and Two Bronze medals separately.
A total of ten Faculties partook in the Games, namely, Faculty of Social Sciences; Faculty of Arts; Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences; Faculty of Management Science; Faculty of Environmental Design; Faculty of Basic Allied Sciences; and Faculty of Computing.
Others were Faculty of Education; Centre for Continued Education and Professional Development.
Games featured in the Games included Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Athletics, Scrabble, Table Tennis, Badminton and Tug of War.
This year’s edition was particularly remarkable, as it marked a decade of sports excellence and camaraderie among the University’s Faculties.
