Gandu enjoys improved power supply, says SRC President
|By Abubakar Ibrahim & Friday Ikagu
Gandu community, a neighbouring village of the Permanent Site Campus of the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) now enjoys an improved power supply.
It would be noted that owing to its proximity to FULafia, Gandu became populated by mostly staff and students of FULafia, making the community an area of interest to the authorities of the University.
Before now, Gandu was known for its epileptic power supply, making life hard for especially students who had to trek at night to the Permanent Site Campus either to read or charge their phones.
Similarly, owing to the very poor electricity supply to Gandu, life became unbearable for staff and students because of heat “since there’s no power to put on our fans and charge our phones and laptops,” said a student.
Until recently, all efforts to solve the lingering power challenges proved abortive until the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) took their plight to the village head of Gandu who took up the matter with other authorities in Lafia.
Speaking to FULafia Bulletin, the Village Head of Gandu, Mr. Hassan Kasimu, who spoke through Saleh Labaran, said that a 33kva electricity transformer was donated to Gandu in 2013 by Dr Joseph Haruna Kigbu, adding: “Unfortunately, for a long time we’ve not been able to install it until the students came to speak with the village head. That development spurred leaders of the community to take action and obtained loan to get cables and meet the Abuja Electricity Power Authority for installation of the transformer.”
FULafia Bulletin spoke with a student of the Department of Political Science, Mr Abraham Mark, who said that electricity has improved the quality of life in the area.
Another student, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that she is happy “as I can now charge my phone and laptop easily.”
In his reaction, the Students’ Representative Council President, comrade Salihu Haladu Tsaku, commended the village head for the swift attention he gave to their request.
He promised to walk with community heads “in all areas where students are residing to promote welfare and well-being of FULafia students.”
