FULafia V-C, Abdul Rahman, lauds SIC on fire prevention programme

The Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), Prof Shehu Abdul Rahman, has lauded the leadership of the Students Integrity Club (SIC) of the University for organising a fire safety and prevention sensitisation programme for students, saying the programme was timely and important.
Abdul Rahman spoke during a recently held one-day sensitisation programme on fire safety and prevention, which took place at the Faculty of Agriculture Mini Auditorium, Permanent Site Campus of the University.
He said that fire can be an incredibly useful tool for day-to-day usage noting, however, that using fire as a tool requires extreme awareness of safety.
“Fire is essentially useful but it can be unimaginably dangerous and destructive,” he said.
The vice-chancellor emphasised the fact that the ultimate priority of his administration was to ensure the safety of lives and property of every staff and student, saying that the programme would provide adequate information about the hazardous nature of fire, its causes and how to prevent it.
The vice-chancellor advised the students to put every stages of safety discussed into practice, saying that Management of the University would organise another exercise for the entire students to be lectured on how to handle inferno.
Speaking earlier during her welcome address, the President of the Students Integrity Club (SIC), Mohamed Memunat Eleojo, said that the SIC “is a voluntary club created by the Prof. Shehu Abdul Rahman-led administration to promote the wellbeing, safety and morality of the entire members of the University community.”
She said that the fire safety and sensitisation programme was aimed at educating the students’ community on the causes of fire accidents and how best to handle them.
Memunat expressed her gratitude to the vice-chancellor for making the event a successful one.
She also appreciated the Nasarawa State Command of the Federal Fire Service for accepting to partner with the SIC and to educate the students about fire safety, calling on the students to practice safety measures they were taught.
Delivering his lecture, Mr Julius Oyiwose, the guest speaker, took time to explain to the students some of the mistakes capable of causing fire explosion and how to handle it.
Mr Oyiwose supported his explanation with a practical demonstration on how to use the fire extinguisher in putting out fire.
In his goodwill message, Wing Commander Mohamed Umar Awe (rtd), the Director of Environmental Safety of FULafia, advised the students of the University to join the Students Integrity Club, warning them against cultism and indecent dressing on campus.
