The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Lafia, FULafia, Professor Shehu Abdul Rahman, has challenged the newly admitted postgraduate students to be committed to the University’s core values of integrity, excellence and innovation.
Abdul Rahman threw the challenge to the students during their matriculation ceremony which held at the Mallam Adamu Adamu Lectures and Office Complex, Permanent Site Campus of FULafia.
He cautioned them against cultism, joining of unregistered groups and associations, in and outside the campus, saying that involvement in such associations and activities would derail their academic career.
The vice-chancellor also called on the students to shun examination malpractice and desist from indecent dress, engaging in fighting activities and disobeying constituted authorities.
Congratulating the students for what he described as an important milestone in their life, Professor Abdul Rahman stated that many had applied to study at FULafia but failed to secure admission.
“Only a few were admitted,” he revealed, adding: “So, be serious with your academic activities because that is what you are here for.”
The Vice-Chancellor urged the newly admitted students to see their admission as a golden opportunity, saying that they should match it with a corresponding responsibility.
He said: “If you are target-driven and goal-oriented, your average of stay here in the University will lay a solid foundation for your future. Interestingly, the future is even now. Therefore, set your mind to excel and, by the grace of God, excellence shall be yours.”
Abdul Rahman, who alerted the students that they would face challenges in the course of their studies, said that they would overcome the challenges “because challenges are part of life.”
While administering the Matriculation Oath on the newly admitted students, the Registrar of the University, Dr. Abubakar Mamuda, explained that the Matriculation is a solemn and sacred exercise, representing a contract between the students and the University.
Mamuda, charged the students to become great in their chosen career, adding that the sky would be their starting point if they took heed of the counsel given by the vice-chancellor in his address.
The fourth matriculation ceremony of FULafia, and the first under the administration of Abdul Rahman, was attended by the principal officers of the University, Provost of the FULafia Medical College, deans of faculties, directors of academic and non-academic units and a host of others.
