Plans have reached advanced stage to establish Museum in the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia).
This was revealed by the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Shehu Abdul Rahman, when he received the report of the Museum Committee in his office recently.
The committee, headed by Prof. Mallam Al-Bishak, was established to look into the possibility of creating a museum and an archive to showcase the history and heritages of the people of Nasarawa State, in particular, and the North-central Zone in general.
Abdul Rahman expressed his appreciation to members of the committee for their thorough work and efforts made to deliver the reports within the time frame.
He described museums and archives as crucial in the bid to preserve and document local cultures and artifacts, assuring the team that the report will be carefully looked with a view to implementing its recommendation.
The Vice-Chancellor hailed roles being played by museums in promoting human development in all areas of life.
Abdul Rahman said: “We are trying to look at that area which most universities will not think of, because many universities today do not know the advantage of having a museum.”
Abdul Rahman said the museum, when established, would promote entrepreneurship and solve some societal problems and link one ethnic group to another, adding that by so doing, museums foster peace and unity among different people.
He stated that the proposed department of archaeology, when put in place, would complement activities of the soon-to-be established museum.
Earlier, while submitting the committee’s report, Al-Bishak thanked the vice-chancellor and his management team members for finding members of the committee “worthy to carryout such a serious task.”
He assured the vice-chancellor that the members were ready for any other responsibility in the future.
Al-Bishak said that members of the committee have, in the course of carrying out their assignment, enriched their knowledge about the mineral riches and cultural heritages of the state.
According to the chairman, the museum, when established, should be called FULafia Museum and Archives.
He explained that the museum would be used for storage of artifacts and display historical backgrounds of the people of diverse cultures while the archives would keep records and documents that needed to be preserved.
