About Us
The Department of Geography, Federal University of Lafia came into existence in July, 2019 as one of the Departments in the Faculty of Social Sciences. The Department received her first set of students in September, 2021 being the commencement of the 2020/2021 academic session. The Department at its beginning, had twelve (12) academic staff; in the mix of 2 Professors (1 sabbatical & 1 visiting) and 1 Senior Lecturer (on sabbatical leave), 1 Lecturer I, 6 Assistant Lecturers, and 1 Graduate Assistant. Between October, 2019 and June 2021, its academic staff strength was increased by 1 Senior Lecturer, 1 Lecturer I and 2 Assistant Lecturers. Also, the non-academic staff of the Department comprised of a Senior Executive Officer, an Administrative Assistant, and 2 Technologists. Currently, the Department has 17 academic staff and 5 technologists. The academic curriculum of the Department is dynamic to enable both the staff and students to be well grounded in research and scholarship in line with global best practices. Our method of teaching is also in conformity with other world class Universities. Our strategic plan is anchored on manpower development which is geared towards training and equipping of both staff and students with skills needed for sustainable development in an environment which enables the transformation of Nigeria and the world as a whole.
Our goals

1. To provide students with broad and well balanced knowledge of geographical theories and methods.
2. To interpret geographic concepts, theories, problems and methods so that they can apply such knowledge in solving human problems.
3. To identify careers in areas like geographic information system, surveying, urban and rural planning, environmental impact assessment, environmental management; climate change. Such skills will equip geography graduates to fit into many areas in both the public and private sectors of the economy.
4. To apply geographical concepts to different socio-cultural contexts.
5. To cultivate the ability to apply their geographical knowledge and skills to the understanding and solution of societal problems in Nigeria and elsewhere.
6. To develop a range of useful skills and competencies for public, private or self-employment.

HOD's profile
Dr. M.K. Dahiru, is an Associate Professor & Acting HoD. He is also the Acting Director of the Directorate of Linkages and Advancement of the university. He holds a PhD in Environmental Resources Planning from the University of Jos. An Environmentalist with bias in Environmental Resource Planning, Environmental Sustainability, Gender Issues, & Community Development. Highly experienced in Project Management & Evaluation, Environmental Safeguards & Management. He has many scholarly articles to his credit and is widely travelled. Member of many professional bodies. He is married with children.

Admission Requirements

Direct Entry Requirements:
Two (2) ‘A’ Level passes in Geography and any one of Economics, Government, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics

UTME Requirements:
Five (5) SSC credit passes in Geography, English, Mathematics, and any two (2) from Social Sciences and Science subjects.
JAMB Subjects:
Geography and two (2) other Social Science or Science subjects.

The Department offers a conducive environment for learning and research.
