About Us
At the commencement of academic programme, a total of 15 students comprising of 10 male and 5 female were admitted into the Department while member of staff includes: Dr Imam Akeyede (Associate Professor and the pioneer Head of Department), Prof O.E Asiribo, I.M Saleh, A.O Abam, D.T Ailobhio, F.G Ibi and D.M.O Omebo, these were supported by Aishat Bello as a Graduate Assistant. The Depatment was resource verified in 2018 and got its full accreditation in 2021.
At the moment, the department has Dr I Akeyede as the Head of Department and a number of staff.. It has also undergone substantial development in its core mandate of teaching, research and community development with active research that cuts across pure and applied Statistics. The department is currently undergoing BSc, PGD, MSc and PhD programmes in Statisics
The Statistics programme is designed to expose students to modern statistical theory and various applications of Statistics. Throughout the programme, there will be emphasis on laboratory-based work and problem-based learning via statistical inference, modelling and programming, analysing and interpretation of real life problems
Our goals
i. toprepare graduates for careers in, but not limited to the finance, health, agriculture, policy making, industry etc;
ii. to familiarise students with computational techniques and software typically used in Statistics;
iii. to continue to produce competent statisticians for the public institutions, private establishments, industries and academic organisations;
iv. to prepare students for further study at the postgraduate level
v. to construct practical statistical models for several processes in the real life problems;
vi. to be a second home for members of staff from Mathematics and other related disciplines;
vii. to train students up to M.Sc. and Ph.D degrees in Statistics;
Programmes
The B.Sc. Statistics is designed to expose students to modern statistical theory and various applications of Statistics. Throughout the programme, there will be emphasis on laboratory-based work and problem-based learning via statistical inference, modelling and programming, analysing and interpretation of real life problems. Each course in the programme is of both a theoretical and practical nature exposing the students to different techniques and methodology of Statistics that are used in society. Illustrative examples will be taken from different disciplines that require Statistics.
Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) Statistics
The Department offers postgraduate diploma (PGD) degree programme in Statistics leading to the award of PGD (Statistics). The programme is designed for those who hold Higher National Diploma or Bachelor of Science degree in Statistics and other comparable degrees. The goal is to deepen their knowledge in Statistics and to acquaint students with skills and competence needed for pursuing further research/study in Statistics. The programme involves the following:
Master of Science (MSc) Statistics
The Department of Statistics offers a Master of Science (MSc) degree programme that leads to the award of M.Sc. (Statistics). The programme is intended for people who hold a Bachelor of Science in Statistics, a Postgraduate Diploma in Statistics, or a related area. The purpose is to broaden their horizons and strengthen their undergraduate knowledge. The course is also designed to familiarize students with the skills and competencies required for further research/study in Statistics.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Programme in Statistics
The Department of Statistics offers a doctor of phylosophy (PhD) degree programme that leads to the award of PhD. (Statistics). The programme is intended for people who hold a Master of Science in Statistics. The purpose is to provide qualifying students with an in-depth understanding and integrated knowledge of advanced applicable theory in the field of Statistics and to come out with an innovation which will contribute to positive socio-economic transformation of the nation. The course is also designed to familiarize students with the skills and competencies required for further research/study in Statistics. The following are part of the programme:
