Plant Science & Biotechnology

Welcome to Department of Plant Science & Biotechnology

About Us
The Department of Botany is an off shoot from the Department of Biological Sciences which was one of the foundation Departments of the Federal University of Lafia Nasarawa State, Nigeria, established in February 2011 by the Federal Government of Nigeria. The Department under the leadership of the current Head of Department Dr. (Mrs) Hauwa Ahmed Kana focuses on developing programes and awarding Bachelor of Science Degrees (B.Sc) in Botany. Furthermore, with the resource verification carried out by National Universities Commission (NUC) in March, 2023 for the Department to metamorphose to Plant Science and Biotechnology, students of the Department when admitted will be graduating with a Degree (B.Sc.) in Plant Science and Biotechnology. and PGD in Horticulture, Conservation and Biodiversity. In addition to these fields, the Department also awards M.Sc. Degrees in Plant ecology, Plant Pathology and Plant Biodiversity, as well as Ph.Ds in these fields.. However, with the diversification by Federal Government into food security coupled with Nasarawa State being particularly famous for agriculture and natural plant products, the Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology has therefore keyed into the University’s programmes that will help develop the requisite capacities in improving the knowledge on plant culture, diversity, highbred seeds, conservation and use for food, shelter, health, clothing and other assorted uses. The Department has also deviated from skills for employment to capacity building initiatives for job creation. Graduates are trained to excel in a competitive market arena and make positive impact on the nation’s economy as employers of labour.
Our Philosophy
The B.Sc Plant Science and Biotechnology, PGD, M.Sc and Ph.D. programmes are designed to provide a sound understanding of the concepts and methodologies of Plant Science and Biotechnology, Horticulture, conservation as well as Biodiversity in key areas that meet the needs of society. Consequently, emphasis is placed on the applied as well as theoretical aspects. The Philosophy of the programme is aimed at producing graduates who will be knowledgeable in Plant Science and Biotechnology as well as Plant Biodiversity, using modern applications of Biotechnology, in order to contribute to National development in agriculture, science and technology, environment, industry, health and other related applications of Plant Biotechnology. It is significant to note that current and projected variations in the universal application of science and technology for man’s use are dynamic. Hence, it is vital to explore innovative advances and initiatives in for science and technology to solve problems in plant science and associated disciplines. Conventional or traditional scientific knowledge is no longer realistic in meeting these challenges, thus the emphasis of biotechnology in the study of plant biology is relevant for enhanced application of the derived capacity in agriculture, environment, medicine and allied industries.
Aims & Objectives
The main objectives of the programmes are to: • expose the students to the fundamental principles of using modern biotechnology as a tool for improving and preserving plants for optimum use in human development. • provide students with knowledge and skill base for Postgraduate studies, professional studies and services and independent research studies in all sectors of plant sciences. • enhance creativity, innovation, and increased opportunities for productive employment and self, actualization. • expose the students to practical applications of Plant Science and Biotechnology and introduce them to using plants in agriculture, health, environment and industry. Hence, a six – month industrial training and field experience is incorporated as part of the four-year degree programme.
Employment Opportunities
Graduates of Plant Science and Biotechnology will be ready for gainful employment and career development in: Petroleum and Oil Companies (Exploration to Pollution Control), Food Production, Agricultural and Forest Resources, Pharmaceutical Industries and Laboratories, Chemical and agro-chemical Establishments. Conservation of Natural and Environmental Plant Resources, Horticulture and Landscaping Design, Plant Breeding Stations, Mycological Institutes, Teaching and Research Institutes (e.g Universities and Research Institutes), Ministries of Agriculture, Natural Resources, Environment, Trade and Industries, Science and Technology as well as the Health sector. Government Parastatals like Customs and Excise, National Seed Service, NAFDAC, Plant Quarantine, NDLEA, Environmental Protection Agency; Private sectors like Agriculture/Insurance companies, Agricultural Farm Estates, Consultancy Services, Tissue culture and Micro propagation Companies.
