Introduction
The establishment of Bachelor of Nursing Science (B.N.Sc) program in Federal University of Lafia was conceptualized in 2016 under the Vice-Chancellorship of Professor Mohammed Sanusi Liman. This was then proposed to the University Senate for consideration and approval in 2018, and approval for the establishment of the program was thereafter granted. National University Commission resource verification team visited the Department in November 2019 to ascertain the level of preparedness of the University to mount the program. The visit by the team was successful. The department had its pioneer students in September 2021. The department had the Nursing and Midwifery Council resource verification in October 2023 which was successful.
Philosophy
The Philosophy of the Department of Nursing Science, Federal University of Lafia, draws from Nigeria's philosophy of education, the "Vision" of the Federal University of Lafia and the philosophy of Nursing profession. The Federal Government of Nigeria has adopted education, as an instrument for national development. The Nigeria National Policy on Education (1981) categorically state that the nation's philosophy of education is based on the integration of the individual into a sound and effective citizen and equal educational opportunities for all citizens of the nation at all levels, both inside and outside the formal school system. Recent reforms in Nigeria's higher education policy believes in increased institutional autonomy, greater system differentiation, strengthened governance, and mechanism for quality assurance, intended to bring the university system more in line with international good practices. The professional nurse helps the individual, family, and community to adopt healthy lifestyles, using analytic and scientific processes as well as application of appropriate knowledge, skills and experiences from related disciplines. The department thus believes that the healthcare team approach, involving the individual, the family and the community who all play significant roles in healthcare, is the most effective approach to health promotion, maintenance, and restoration.
Aims of the Program
1. To advance the academic standards stipulated by the Federal University of Lafia. 2. To provide an environment conducive for the teaching, learning, and practicing of quality evidence-based nursing. 3. To produce professional nurse practitioners, who can provide high quality and acceptable nursing care to individuals, families, and communities of varying backgrounds, across cultures, nationally and internationally, both individually and as corporate team players. 4. To develop research capacities in students through exposure to problem situations, case studies and research projects as well as involvement in research teams. 5. To build capacity of faculty members and other nurses in the practice area within and outside the university, through the development and implementation of continuing education programs. 6. To carry out research aimed at improving the quality of nursing and providing basis for evidence-based professional care. 7. To proactively develop strategic plans for the department, aimed at moving the department forward in line with advancements in the nursing profession.
Vision
The department of Nursing Science FULAFIA, envisions an education structure where graduate nurses are groomed and prepared to deliver evidence-based care with dignity, through a qualitative teaching, learning and research process, that produces graduates that are competent, skilled, and knowledgeable in the Nursing profession.

Admission Requirements
Candidates seeking admission into the B.N.Sc. program of the Department of Nursing Science, Faculty of Health Sciences of the Federal University of Lafia, must satisfy the general entry requirements of the University as well as the minimum entry requirements for the B.N.Sc. program as stipulated below. Candidates seeking admission into the department through pre-degree courses in the Faculty of Health Sciences of the Federal University of Lafia must also satisfy the minimum entry requirements for the B.N.Sc. program of the University as stated below. A. Entry into 100 Level Candidate must pass the University Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) with good grades in Chemistry, Physics, Biology and English and meet the minimum cut off point set for entry. Candidate must pass at Credit level in 5 subjects including English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology in the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSC) of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) or National Examination Council (NECO) (NABTEB), at not more than two (2) sittings. Students from the Department of Remedial Studies of Federal University of Lafia must have credits in five (5) 'O' Level subjects as stated in (3) above and pass Remedial Examinations and UTME as in 1 above. B. Direct Entry into 200 Level Candidates for Direct Entry into 200 Level are exempted from the University Tertiary
Duration
The B.N.Sc. program shall run for five (5) academic years for UTME and Remedial candidates; and four (4) years for Direct Entry candidates. The program will be run on sessional basis.
