Profile
The Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture was established in 2018/2019 academic session, under the Faculty of Agriculture; Federal University of Lafia; with the aim of providing teaching and research. The department provides man power and training needs that will be employable as well as employers of labour. It provides an increasing food supply to bridge the gap between the global increasing population and food demand. As more and more people become aware of the importance of aquaculture, it is obvious that there will be decline in fishing activities of our natural water bodies thereby conserving our wild reserves. Aquaculture has a diverse farming system of plants and animal through integrated farming approach, incorporating modern technology that will put aquaculture in the global ranking of sectors that will increase countries Gross Domestic Production (GDP). Our teaching is specialized, personalized and motivating for easy comprehension of our students. Our staff are professionals, highly disciplined, focused and result oriented. Fisheries and aquaculture graduates, more than ever, are tasked to acquire necessary training and content knowledge required of them in the 21st Century to compete globally and address many important issues in the quest for sustainable development of Nigeria. Aside the key roles they play in food and nutritional security, employment and livelihood and foreign exchange earnings, the two sources of fish, aquatic plant and shellfishes fundamentally impact on the quest of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Objectives
The objectives of B. Sc. Fisheries and Aquaculture program are to: ⮚ Produce proficient graduates with vast knowledge of fisheries to satisfy the high-level manpower needed by the nation in Fisheries and Aquaculture with orientation towards entrepreneurship skills and self-employment. ⮚ Produce graduates with sufficient theoretical and technical knowledge in all aspects of Fisheries and Aquaculture and possess abilities to apply the analytical tools, knowledge and skills acquired to the solution of societies’ economic problems. ⮚ Produce graduates that are well-equipped with up-to-date techniques in fisheries necessary for sustainable fish production who will be able to perform satisfactorily in any of the following institutions: River Basin Authorities, Federal and State Ministries of Agriculture, industrial fish firms, fish farms and developmental agencies, among others. ⮚ Produce graduates who are prepared for postgraduate studies in all areas of specialisation in Fisheries and Aquaculture across the globe.
Vision & Mission
Vision The vision of the Department is to promote sustainability of Fisheries and Aqua-cultural development through practical and entrepreneurial management. Also, the Department seeks to contribute substantially to human resources development in the areas of fisheries production and management through research and training. Mission The Department seeks to provide functional education in the field of Fisheries and Aquaculture based on sound scientific and technological principles and practices. It therefore aims to provide training in fisheries management and aquaculture; and to provide the needed manpower for the development and production of fisheries resources as vital renewable resources, to meet national and global challenges of food security, environment and other concerns that may arise.
Philosophy
The program is designed to provide a general and in-depth knowledge in various areas of Fisheries and Aquaculture, with emphasis on exposure to application of Fisheries and Aquaculture in solving the problems of mankind in food and nutrition security, job and livelihood provisioning, sustainable ecological and social-economic development. The program will train students in qualitative and quantitative approaches using multi-disciplinary lens.

Admission and Graduation Requirements
Admission and Graduation Requirements Admission requirements Candidates are admitted into the degree program by any of the following ways: ⮚ Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) ⮚ Direct entry (DE) UTME: Four-Year Degree Program In addition to UTME score, the candidate should possess five credits passes in Senior Secondary Certificate (SSCE) to include English Language, Mathematics, Biology or Agricultural Science, Chemistry and Physics in not more than two sittings. Direct entry mode Candidates must have at least 2 credit passes in Advance level or its equivalents in Chemistry and Biology plus Five SSC (or its equivalent) credit pass prescribed for UTME entry mode. Diploma Holders in Fisheries and Aquaculture and related field with a minimum of Lower Credit plus Five SSC (or its equivalent) credit pass Level at a maximum of two sittings are eligible for consideration for admission into 200 level. Graduation requirements To be eligible for graduation a student must have satisfied the following: ⮚ The minimum credit units required of 120 for students admitted through UTME and 140 for direct entry; ⮚ The stipulated number of years for graduation; ⮚ All core and required courses as indicated in the University ⮚ Prerequisite courses and passed them before registration for a corresponding course at a higher level.
