About Us
Library and information Department was established in September 2018/2019 academic session. Library and Information Science is a professional programme concerned with the systematic acquisition, organization and dissemination of information resources to different user communities for their individual, corporate and national development. In other words, the programme train and retrain information professionals the skills and techniques of acquisition, processing and dissemination of information for nation building. The Department is carefully designed to produce Librarians and information professionals who are highly knowledgeable, skilful and competent in discharging their expected duties in the society. The rationale for the introduction of the programme is the need to train and retrain information professionals to manage the numerous libraries and information centres in various academic, school, special and public institutions Nasarawa state and Nigeria as a whole. The need to develop a degree programme to absorb the products of Diploma programme being run at the Nasarawa state polytechnic.
Our goals
In pursuit of ethical standards and academic excellence, the Department is committed to : 1. Train students to acquire adequate research competence in Library and Information Science 2. Encourage ICT and entrepreneurial skills in Library and Information Science in line with global practice 3. Provide a conducive learning environment for students 4. Ensure that merit is maintained in awarding the B.L.I.S. degree 5. Promote good staff-student relationship that will engender proper learning and communication
Programmes

The Department of Library and Information science (LIS) is a library school that provides professional training for library and information professionals. This programme is carefully designed to produce librarians and information professionals who are highly knowledgeable, skilful and competent in discharging their expected duties in the society. The programmes in librarianship will avail graduate librarians opportunities to work in the following areas of human endeavours:
I. The libraries i.e. national, public, academic, school, special, etc.
II. Teaching in library schools
III. Banking sectors i.e. as customers service departments, libraries and records units.
IV. Industries i.e. as public relations departments, information or library units.
V. Hospitals i.e. as records officers and hospital libraries.
VI. Publishing/printing press i.e. editing, indexing, etc.
VII. Media centres
VIII. Information consultancy services.
IX. Book vendors/bookshop managers
X. Judicial libraries, law firms, law institutes, law courts, etc.
XI. Military/Para-military formations
XII. Information centres
XIII. The information communication technologies (ICTs) i.e. web designs, internet services, data base management, social media services, etc.

News Update
Library and Information Science is to produce and equip graduates with needed skills through quality teaching, learning and research so that they can contribute to the socio-economic growth of Nigeria and the world at large. Library and Information Science is to be a renowned centre of learning, research and innovation; producing graduates who are competent in the theory and application of Library and Information Science and its applied Technologies for solving the socio-economic problems of the country. Library and Information Science department has successful graduate its pioneer set and has obtained Senate approval of P.G programmes (PGDLIS, MLIS, PhD). Also the senate has given approval to the Department to run Part-time degree courses in Library and Information Science These update demonstrate the level of attainment in access and utilization of information for problem- solving in any society is measured to a large extent by the quality of information scientists as custodian of the profession. It is therefore, to educate new breeds of modern information scientists who can advance the professional practice in line with global standards.

Admission Requirements

The entry requirement shall be a minimum of the following:
a. Five “O” level credits in WAEC/NECO/GCE (O,L)/NABTEB examinations including English language and mathematics at not more than two sittings.
b. UTME subjects: English and any three subjects.
c. Direct Entry: candidates applying into 200L, shall require diploma/ND in Library and Information Science, NCE, A’Level, IJMB with a minimum of upper credit/merit passes respectively) and five O/L passes as applicable in (a above).
d. Candidate with a diploma in library and information science from a recognized university or polytechnic/IJMB/NCE/GCE/A’Level with credit passes in other relevant subjects may be admitted into 200 Level. In addition, candidates must satisfy the university’s general entry requirements.
