Vision: Our vision is to be a center of excellence in French studies, fostering linguistic proficiency, cultural awareness, and intercultural competence. We aim to cultivate a community of scholars and learners committed to the exploration of the French language and its diverse cultural manifestations. Mission Statement: The Department of French at Federal University of Lafia is dedicated to providing high-quality education, fostering linguistic and cultural competence, and promoting cross-cultural understanding and exchange. Our mission is to equip students with the linguistic skills, cultural knowledge, and critical thinking abilities needed to engage meaningfully with the French-speaking world and contribute positively to a global society. Aims and Objectives: Advance Language Proficiency: - To provide comprehensive language instruction that develops students' proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in French, enabling them to communicate effectively in a variety of contexts. Promote Cultural Awareness: - To foster an appreciation for the diversity and richness of French-speaking cultures, including their literature, art, history, and social practices, encouraging students to engage critically with cultural texts and artifacts. Facilitate Intercultural Exchange: - To create opportunities for intercultural exchange and dialogue between students, faculty, and members of the French-speaking community, promoting understanding, empathy, and respect across linguistic and cultural boundaries. Enhance Academic Excellence: - To maintain high academic standards and rigorous scholarship in the study of French language, literature, and culture, encouraging students to pursue intellectual curiosity and critical inquiry in their academic pursuits.
Programmes
    Programmes: Undergraduate Programs: Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in French: - Description: A comprehensive program offering language proficiency courses, as well as courses in French literature, culture, and civilization. This program prepares students for careers in translation, interpretation, education, international relations, and more. - Curriculum may include: French language courses (beginner to advanced levels), French literature courses (medieval to contemporary), French culture and civilization courses, Study abroad opportunities. Graduate Programs: Master of Arts (M.A.) in French Studies: - Description: A graduate-level program providing advanced study in French language, literature, and culture, with opportunities for specialization in areas such as literary analysis, linguistics, Francophone studies, or cultural studies. - Curriculum may include: Advanced courses in French literature and culture, Research seminars, Thesis or comprehensive exam option, Teaching assistantship opportunities. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in French: - Description: A doctoral program designed for students interested in pursuing advanced research in French language, literature, or culture. This program typically involves coursework, comprehensive exams, dissertation research, and teaching experience. - Curriculum may include: Advanced seminars in French literature, Linguistics, or Cultural studies, Research methodology courses, Dissertation research and writing.
