About Us
Research: Faculty members and researchers within the department engage in a wide range of research activities aimed at addressing agricultural and rural development challenges. This research may encompass areas such as agricultural productivity and efficiency, market analysis, food security, environmental sustainability, rural livelihoods, and policy analysis.
Extension Services: Agricultural extension is a cornerstone of these departments, where the knowledge generated through research is disseminated to farmers and rural communities. Extension services involve various outreach activities, including training programs, workshops, field demonstrations, farmer field schools, and the development of educational materials aimed at improving agricultural practices and enhancing farmers' livelihoods.
Policy Analysis and Advocacy: Departments of Agricultural Economics and Extension often engage in policy analysis and advocacy efforts to influence agricultural policies at local, national, and international levels. This may involve conducting research on the socioeconomic impacts of agricultural policies, providing recommendations to policymakers, and advocating for policies that support sustainable agriculture, rural development, and food security.
Community Engagement: These departments actively engage with farming communities, agricultural stakeholders, government agencies, NGOs, and other organizations to address the needs and challenges of rural areas. This engagement may include collaborative research projects, capacity-building initiatives, and partnerships aimed at fostering sustainable agricultural development and improving rural livelihoods.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Given the multifaceted nature of agricultural and rural development issues, departments of Agricultural Economics and Extension often collaborate with other departments and disciplines, such as agronomy, animal science, environmental science, economics, sociology, and public policy, to address complex challenges holistically.

The Department’s vision is to contribute to increasing agricultural productivity, improving socio-economic status of farmers and enhancing rural development in Nigeria.
Mission
The mission of the Department is to produce academically sound and professionally competent graduates who will be able to facilitate increased production and utilization of agricultural raw materials as well as self-sufficiency in food production.
Our goals
The specific objectives are to:
i. develop data on crop and livestock and other renewable natural resources in Nigeria.
ii. expose students to the relationship between human needs and resources, farm production system and the environment.
iii. train needed manpower consistent with the requirement of an integrated research extension system and the environment.
iv. accelerate the diffusion and mass adoption of new technologies among farmers in Nigeria through effective linkage with the State Agricultural Development Programmes (ADPs).
v. develops training facilities, methods, and communication technologies for imparting new farming skills to Nigerian farmers.)

Dr. Stella Ojone Adejoh, a seasoned professional in Agricultural Extension, Rural Sociology, and Gender Studies, embodies a wealth of expertise and dedication. With a Ph.D. in Agricultural Extension & Rural Sociology from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, I possess a comprehensive understanding of agricultural dynamics, including food systems, value chains, climate change, and gender issues.
As a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension, Federal University, Lafia, I am committed to nurturing the next generation of agricultural leaders. My consultancy work with the IFAD/Value Chain Development Programme focused on improving farmers' livelihoods through rice and cassava value chains, reflecting my dedication to sustainable development.
Beyond academia, I served as the Director General/Secretary of the Kogi State Bureau of Public Procurement, advocating for transparent and accountable governance. My engagement in community service, particularly with NGOs promoting women's empowerment and social development, underscores my commitment to societal progress.
My research endeavors are evident in numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals, conference papers, and theses. I am passionate about advancing gender-sensitive approaches in agriculture and rural development, contributing to scholarly discourse and practical solutions.
Possessing skills in data analysis, project management, and effective communication, I am recognized for my contributions to agricultural extension, rural sociology, and gender studies. Outside of work, I enjoy reading, networking, travel, and culinary exploration.
With a steadfast commitment to excellence and a drive for positive change, I am honored to continue making meaningful contributions to the advancement of agriculture, rural development, and gender equity.

Admission Requirements
1. The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)
2. Direct entry
UTME – Five Year Degree Programme
In addition to UTME score, the candidate should possess five credit passes in Senior Secondary Certificate (SSCE) to include English Language, Mathematics, Biology or Agricultural Science, Chemistry and Physics in not more than two sittings.
Direct entry mode
Candidates must have at least 2 credit passes in Advance level or its equivalents in Chemistry and Biology plus Five SSC (or its equivalent) credit pass prescribed for UTME entry mode. Diploma Holders with a minimum of Lower Credit plus Five SSC (or its equivalent) credit pass Level at a maximum of two sittings are eligible for consideration for admission into 200 and 300 levels respectively.
Duration
The minimum duration for the Programme is 5 academic sessions (5-year duration) for candidates who enter through the UTME mode. Direct entry candidates admitted to the 200-level in agriculture programmes will spend a minimum of 4 academic sessions (4-year duration) while those admitted to the 300 level will spend a minimum of three years (3-year duration).
