Newly admitted students of Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB), under the School of Basic and Remedial Studies (SBRS), Federal University of Lafia, FULafia, have been advised to develop the habit of reading to enrich their intellect.
The advice was given by the Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Lafia, FULafia, Professor Shehu Abdul Rahman, during an orientation programme organised for the 4th set of IJMB, students of the institution which took place at Mallam Adamu Adamu Lecture and Office Complex at Permanent Site Campus, Lafia.
Addressing the over 400 newly admitted students, the vice-chancellor, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Idris O.O. Amali, called on them to take their studies seriously, warning them against cultism and other vices.
He said that “stiff penalties await students who flagrantly disobey the University standing rules and regulations.”
He urged the IJMB students to remember the sons and daughters of whom they are in order not to disappoint their parents.
Good students, he pointed out, “make their parents feel happy and proud, instead.”
Professor Abdul Rahman described the IJMB as a golden opportunity, saying: “Use this means to transit to the next level of your academic pursuit.”
In a paper he presented, titled: “Getting to know your University, FULafia,” the Registrar of the University, Dr Abubakar Mamuda, reminded the students to be conscious of the fact that they were “not yet bonafide students of the Federal University of Lafia, FULafia,” saying that “only those that study hard and pass their IJMB examinations would be admitted into the institution’s undergraduate programme.”
The registrar, represented by the Deputy Registrar and Head of Legal Unit, Barrister Ignatius Effiom, urged the students to shun all forms of laziness, truancy and other unholy attitudes to achieve the purpose for which they were admitted for the IJMB programme.
Dr Mamuda told the IJMB students to count themselves lucky for being considered for admission urging them to take advantage of the opportunity to excel in life.
According to him, Federal University of Lafia “will always be known for its discipline and good academic standards.”
Earlier, in his welcome address, the Director of School of Basic and Remedial Studies, Professor Matthew Olaleke Aremu, explained that the orientation programme was intended to enable students settle down and adjust to the University’s academic, social and cultural environments.
The director disclosed that the SBRS was established by the authorities of the Federal University of Lafia, to provide an alternative route into the institution.
Professor Aremu thanked the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shehu Abdul Rahman, and his management team members for supporting the SBRS at all times.
“It is worthy of note that the vice-hancellor, Professor Shehu Abdul Rahman, has been very supportive towards the growth and development of SBRS and for him to approve the orientation programme for the 4th set of IJMB students, we should all commend him,” he said.
The well attended orientation programme witnessed the presence of the Provost, College of Medical Science, FULafia, Professor Ahmed Yakubu Ashuku, Chairman, Committee of Dean’s and Directors, Professor Josephine Odey, among many other people, just as the guest speakers were drawn from various units and departments of the University.
