Department Overview:
Brief History
The journey to establish Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (B.MLS) in Federal University of Lafia began in 2016 under the Vice-Chancellorship of Professor Mohammed Sanusi Liman. Proposal for the establishment of B.MLS was presented to the University Senate for consideration and approval by the then Dean of Science, Professor Emmanuel Hala Kwon-Ndung, the Coordinating Dean of the Faculty during the 46th Regular Meeting of the Senate held on 7th December, 2016. At the end of the meeting, approval to establish and mount B.MLS was granted. The Department was initially mounted in “Faculty of Basic Health Sciences”. It had this nomenclature changed to Faculty of Medical Science in 2017 under the Deanship of Professor John Ibu then, to Faculty of Basic Medical Science. The Department is currently domiciled in the newly activated Faculty of Health Sciences with Prof. S.A. Junaid as the Pioneer Dean.

1. Vision: The vision of the Department is to become a leading World Class Centre of excellence, committed to raising a new generation of outstanding Medical Laboratory Scientists who will be innovative and creative.
2. Mission: The mission of the Department is to produce future leaders in the field of Medical Laboratory Science through combination of robust basic science education and innovative research training.
3. Philosophy: The philosophy of the Department of Medical Laboratory Science is to admit students who will excel in their career and graduate to become outstanding Medical Laboratory Scientists, educators, researchers, leaders, entrepreneurs and advocates capable of working and adapting anywhere in Nigeria and globally. To achieve this, the Department created an academic atmosphere that encourages academic excellence, innovation, interdisciplinary and collaborative studies. This is reflected in the university motto “integrity, innovation and excellence”.

News Update
Conference & Workshop
1. Standards in the Conduct of MLSCN Examinations and CPD, Nigeria Resource Center, Durumi, Abuja. 19th-21st June, 2023.
2. Training on “The Conduct of Examinations and Development of A Policy Document for Examinations in FULafia” A 3-Day Training and Workshop organized by Federeal University of Lafia, held between the 14th to 16th February, 2023 in Fulafia.
3. Training on “Standards in the conduct of Medical Laboratory Science Council Examination and Continuous Professional Development”. A 3-Day Training and Workshop organized by the medical laboratory science council of Nigeria, between the 18th to 22nd June, 2023 in Abuja Nigeria.
4. Training on “Acceptable Academic Standards for Lectures and Examinations in the University. ” A 1-Day Training and Workshop organized by Federal University of Lafia, held between the 10th of May, 2023 for all Heads of Department, Departmental Examination Officers and Faculty Examination Officers.

You are warmly welcome to Medical Laboratory Science Department, one of the prominent Department in Faculty of Health Sciences and College of Medicine Federal University of Lafia. The Department is a conglomeration of well selected intellectuals with vast experience in Teaching, research and community service. The Administration of the Departmentis run by the Head of Department, Head of Administration and other senior non-teaching staff, who are all very proficient in the day to day administration of the Department. The quality and timely services our staff render is one of the long standing experiences anyone would always emulate. A sight at our sophisticated Laboratory equipment and classrooms furnished with modern teaching aids and technologies will further juxtapose our closeness to being ranked one of the best, not only in Nigeria but in the west African sub region and, perhaps globally. The Department has a generation of disciplined, dedicated and thorough Lecturers who give zero tolerance to any form of malpractice and indiscipline.
