Admission Requirements
a. University Matriculation Examination (UME)
i. Admissions into 100 level shall be through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) conducted annually by Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board. An acceptable pass in this with appropriate subject combination is required for admission into 100 Level.
ii. A candidate seeking admission into Mathematics programme of FULafia shall possess at least credit level passes in five subjects including English language, Mathematics and Physics to form the core subjects with credits in any other two relevant science subjects at the Senior Secondary School Certificate or its equivalent.
b. Direct Entry into 200 Level
i. Candidates shall (in addition to 5 credits as mentioned in (aii) above) obtain at least 2 A’ level passes at GCE or its equivalent in the relevant subjects.
ii. Holders of ND or NCE certificate with a minimum of upper credits; and holders of HND with lower credit from recognized institutions may be admitted into 200 level (year two) of Mathematics programme, provided they satisfy the minimum requirements stipulated for entry into 100 level.
a) PGD in Mathematics
Structure of the Programme
The Department offers postgraduate diploma (PGD) degree programme in Mathematics leading to the award of PGD (Mathematics). The programme is designed for those who hold Higher National Diploma or Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and other comparable degrees. The goal is to deepen their knowledge in Mathematics and to acquaint students with skills and competence needed for pursuing further research/study in Mathematics.
Candidates seeking the admission into the PGD Mathematics programme must satisfy the following criteria.
(i) Five credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, and any other three relevant science subjects (i.e. Physics, Further Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology/Agricultural Science, Animal Husbandry, ICT and Geography) at senior secondary school certificate.
(ii) A Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education or any relevant discipline with at least third class from Federal University of Lafia or other recognized University.
(iii) Higher National Diploma (HND) holders with at least a lower credit pass in relevant disciplines from a recognized institution.
b) MSc in Mathematics
Structure of the Programme
The Department offers Masters of Science (MSc) degree programme in Mathematics leading to the award of M.Sc. (Mathematics) in two major options of Pure and Applied mathematics. The programme is designed for those who hold Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics or other related discipline. The goal is to widen their horizon and deepens the knowledge obtained at undergraduate level. The study is also structured to acquaint students with skills and competence needed for pursuing further research/study in Mathematics. The programme involves the following:
Prospective students are to register for a total of not less than 30 credit units, excluding undergraduate courses that may be recommended by the department.
In consultation with the supervisor, the student must choose a research topic in his or her area of specialization, this should be within the available research areas within the department or on the basis of interdisciplinary research.
Candidates seeking the admission into the MSc Mathematics programme must satisfy the following criteria.
(i) Five credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, and any other three relevant science subjects (i.e. Physics, Further Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology/Agricultural Science, Animal Husbandry, ICT and Geography) at senior secondary school certificate.
(ii) A Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education or any relevant discipline with at least third class from Federal University of Lafia or other recognized University.
(iii) Higher National Diploma (HND) holders with at least a lower credit pass in relevant disciplines from a recognized institution.
c) PhD in Mathematics
In addition to the general requirements of Postgraduate School, candidates seeking admission into the Ph.D Mathematics programme must satisfy the following criteria:
a) Five credit passes in English Language, Mathematics and any other two relevant sciences subjects (i.e. Physics, Further Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography and Agricultural science) at Senior secondary school certificate or its equivalent.
b) Candidate must have Master’s degree in Mathematics from an approved University with a minimum of CGPA of 3.5/5.0 or its equivalence.
c) Candidates must demonstrate adequate intellectual capacity, maturity, effective decision making and problem-solving potentials.
