About Us
Our goals
Mission: The programme aims at producing graduate educators/professionals who will work in regular, inclusive and special schools as educators, administrators and psychosocial rehabilitators/therapists. Specifically, the objectives of the programme are to equip/train the students in the following attributes and skills;
i. Respect for the individual; irrespective of his or her handicapping condition
ii. Ability to educate and care for the various categories of children particularly, those with special needs
iii. Passion to change societal negative attitude towards persons with special needs
iv. Commitment to promote the course of special needs education
v. National consciousness about the needs of the child/person with special needs
vi. Raise awareness level of the community in respect to causes, prevention and intervention strategies of various forms of disability

Admission Requirements
U.T.M.E Five credits at O’ level passes in Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (S.S.C.E.) Grade Two Teachers Certificate or its equivalent, A’ Level of pass mark acceptance are the qualification for admissions into four (4) years Degree Programme.
DIRECT ENTRY APPLICATION Priority will be given to candidates with relevant qualification in Special Education:
a. A pass at merit level in a relevant Diploma Programme (provided the University English requirement has been satisfied)
b. Two (2) passes in relevant subject areas at advanced level with SSCE/GCE O’ level credit passes in three other subject areas in not more than two (2) sittings or Three (3) passes in relevant subject areas at advanced level with SC/GCE O’ level
c. Passes in two (2) major subjects at merit level or credit or its equivalent in three (3) other subjects. Education is accepted as a third ‘A’ level subject Two (2) passes at the IJMB (Interim Joint Matriculation Board), examination or Cambridge moderated Schools of Basic Studies Terminal Examinations in International Baccalaureate from a recognized institution with School Certificate credits equivalent in three other subjects (subject to University requirements).
d. Three passes in C (ii) above with a School Certificate credit or its equivalent in other subjects. The above qualification in C (i) apply to students in colleges of Education to qualify for admission in the B.Sc. Ed Degree Programme.

You are specially welcome to the Department of Special Needs Education and Rehabilitation Sciences (SNERS), Federal University of Lafia, Nigeria. In addition to the curriculum content, the Department offers specialized services and interventions to meet the varying needs of students with disabilities in all environments but with emphasis on inclusive setting. The academic staff of the department works in tandem with the technical support staff and the administrative staff to provide a disability friendly environment both intellectually and socially to enable every student to excel in accordance with their varying abilities. The enabling environment also gives the students access to the educational resources and experiences available to assist all students to maximize their potentials to whatever extent possible. The enabling environment is consciously provided in order to accommodate all learners with diversities.
The department offers a scope of activities and services such as sign language and interpretation, brailing, audiological, rehabilitation and diagnostic assessment for learners with autism spectrum disorder as well as other intellectual disabilities. In providing these services, the department is open to partner with public and private as well as international organizations and individuals.
The department welcomes parents to indeed visit us for the planning of Individualized Educational Program (IEP) for their children/wards with varying special learning needs to enable them excel. It is our desire to serve you better!
