Department of Economics

About Us
The Federal University of Lafia, Nassarawa State, Nigeria was established in February 2011 by the Federal Government of Nigeria. The university was created to increase access to higher education in Nigeria and to ensure equity in the distribution of higher educational institutions and opportunity across the country. The Department of Economics was one of the pioneer departments set up in the faculty of social sciences at the onset of the university in 2011 awarding B.Sc degree in Economics. In 2014 and 2019, the department was granted full accreditation status by the National Universities Commission (NUC). Also, in 2017, following the approval by the National Universities Commission Resource Verification Team to commence postgraduate programs, the department commenced Masters of science (M.Sc) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) postgraduate degrees programs and professional Doctoral and Master’s degrees in Financial economics and health economics in 2018 and 2023 respectively. The department currently has major areas of concentration in which both undergraduate and graduate students are exposed to as follows:
 Economics Theory.
 Mathematical Economics.
 Statistical Economics.
 Econometrics.
 Monetary Economics.
 Development Economics.
 Public finance.

Programmes
B.Sc. Economics:
The major aspect of this program includes economic theories, mathematics, econometrics, and economic policies.
M.Sc. Economics:
The key issues students at this level are exposed to encompasses Advanced micro and Macroeconomics theorizing, econometrics, research methods economics of development, public finance, and monetary vs fiscal policies.
Ph.D. Economics:
The program is designed to engage Ph.D. students on topical issues of national and global economic concerns. As such the program course contents are dynamic as national and global economy evolve.
Professional Postgraduate Programs
PGD, Masters in Financial Economics, Masters in Health Economics and Doctorate of Health Economics:
As professional programs the course contents are structured to situate the programs within the economic context in terms of the market they operate, budget and budgetary process among others.

HOD's profile
Ugwuoke Okwudili Walter was appointed as the Head of Department of Economics in July 2023. He holds B.Sc and M.sc in Economics from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria and PhD in Economics from University of Nigeria Nsukka. Ugwuoke has several publications and book chapters in reputable local and international journal to his credit. He is a full member of some reputable professional and academic bodies. His research interest includes econometrics, public finance, Political economy among others.

Admission Requirements
For a four –year programme:
In addition to UTME score, the candidate should possess a Senior School Certificate with at least five credit passes, at not more than two sittings including Mathematics, English Language and Economics.

For the three-year programme:
Candidates shall possess five SSC credits. In addition, to acceptable passes in at least two social science subjects including Economics at Advanced Level, provided that such passes are not counted at both levels of the examination. For emphasis, credit passes in English Language, Mathematics and Economics or any other social science subject are compulsory.
