Department of Biochemistry

About Us
The Department of Biochemistry started in 2015/2016 session in the Faculty of Science. The Department offers degree programme leading to award of Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Biochemistry. Biochemistry as a discipline is practical oriented and one of the most diverse areas of bio-scientific and biotechnological studies. Several areas of the discipline including Environmental, Food and Nutrition, Enzymology, Industrial and Medical Biochemistry which are of immense benefits to man. In Nigeria, the knowledge of Biochemistry has been applied in various sectors. These include pharmaceutical industry, food, bakery and beverage industries, chemical industries, government regulatory agencies like NAFDAC, non-governmental agencies (NGOs) as well as medical service outfits located in the immediate environment and the country at large. The B.Sc. Biochemistry programme is structured to provide sound knowledge of the basic scientific information and its relationship to the society. This is followed by the application of the scientific knowledge to understand and appreciate biochemical processes.
Our goals

Our Objectives:

1. To teach students about the fundamental processes that occur within cells, including metabolism, signal transduction, and cell communication.
2. To develop strong chemical and analytical skills, enabling students to perform laboratory experiments, analyse data, and interpret results accurately.
3. To cultivate critical thinking skills, enabling students to evaluate and address complex biological and biochemical problems.
4. To train students in laboratory techniques commonly used in biochemistry research, such as chromatography, spectroscopy, and molecular biology techniques
5. To instill a strong sense of ethical responsibility in students, emphasizing the importance of conducting research and practice with integrity and ethical considerations. 6. To provide hands-on laboratory experience, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations and develop technical proficiency. 7. To encourage a global perspective, emphasising the international significance of biochemistry and fostering an awareness of global issues related to health, environment, and biotechnology. 8. To proper solutions through various research to medical, nutritional and environmental challenges.

Welcome Address

On behalf of the Management of the Federal University of Lafia, I welcome you to the Department of Biochemistry where we work to understand life and biomolecules at the molecular level. The Department of Biochemistry aims at providing requisite training to its students. We are a team that is passionate and committed to ensuring that we offer the best for the development of humanity through teaching, research and community service.

Apart from Academic training, the Department also impart knowledge and moral values on the students therefore only students that are found worthy in character and learning would be awarded a degree by the Department of Biochemistry. Therefore, we sincerely enjoin all Students in the Department to work hard to earn a degree that will reflect Integrity, Innovation and Excellence     which are the core value of the University.
