About Us
The Department of Islamic Studies, Federal University of Lafia was established alongside Arabic Studies, Christian Religious Studies and Nigerian Languages (Hausa) by the University Senate Decision at its 50th Regular meeting held on Monday 23rd October, 2017. National Universities Commission (NUC) has sent for a Resource Verification Visit to the Department in November 2019 and approved its establishment and take-off from the 2019/2020 academic session. The Department presently has twelve (12) academic and four (4) administrative staff members. The Department started academic activities with forty-two (42) pioneer students in 2019/2020 academic session. It presently has three sets of Students at 100, 200 and 300 Levels. The total number of students as at this session 2023/2024 is one hundred and five students. The Department runs one undergraduate programme, i.e. B. A. Islamic Studies, where students are trained in basic areas of Islamic Studies such as Qur’anic Studies, Hadith Studies, Islamic Theology, Islamic Law and Jurisprudence, Islamic Thought and Philosophy, Islamic History (including Development of Islam in Asia and Africa), Social and Religious Movements in Islam, Sufism, Comparative Study of Religions, international Relations in Islam and Research methodology. The Department undertakes annual academic activities like Student’s orientation, Workshop and Conference. It publishes a biannual Journal; Dunama Journal of Islamic Studies. The Department is in active collaboration with the Department of Islam and Development Studies, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Nigerian University Scholars in Religions (NUSRel), International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT), The Nigeria Association of Teachers of Arabic and Islamic Studies, Association for the Study of Arabic Language and Linguistics in Nigeria (ASALLIN), National Association for the Study of Religion (NASR), etc.
Our goals
The aim of Islamic Studies Programme is to educate and produce well enlightened intellectuals, knowledgeable in various branches of Islamic Sciences and related courses so as to serve as good ambassadors of Islam in sustaining a balanced society conscious of Allah in all aspects of life. The objectives of the programme are to:

1. Acquaint students with the broad knowledge of Islam as a divinely revealed religion and system of life;
2. Prepare students to understand Islam as a complete way of life covering all aspects of human culture and civilization;
3. Prepare students to analyze and proffer solution to challenges of contemporary Muslims communities, demand and practice of the Islamic legal system with particular reference to Nigeria;
4. Make students understand the position of Islam in the context of other world religious traditions especially those that relate to Nigeria;
5. Train students that would adequately serve the staffing needs of schools, judiciary, administration and other relevant establishments in Nigeria and beyond.
6. Produce graduates that will progress to postgraduate levels of studies in Islamic Studies with intellectual capabilities and imaginative thoughts.
7. Produce graduates with sound moral academic and professional training for peaceful propagation of Islam and dialogue among Muslims and non-Muslim in Nigeria and beyond.
8. Acquaint students with appropriate knowledge and skills to promote peaceful co-existence, mutual respect and conflict resolution in multi-religious polities like Nigeria.
9. Equip students with various ways Islamic frameworks for tackling corruption and moral decadence in human societies.

HOD's profile
Prof.Muhammad Tanko Aliyu (Baitullah) a Professor of Islamic Studies (in the area of Qur'anic Studies) is the Head of Department of Islamic Studies, Federal University of Lafia, Nasarawa State, Nigeria. He was first appointed Ag. HOD in 2019 got renewed in 2020, 2021, and 2022. He was later appointed as the substantive HOD when his promotion to Professor was announced on the 27th July 2023 with effect from 1st October 2022. He is also the current Dean of Faculty of Arts appointed on 27th July 2023. Prof. M. T. Aliyu is an internal Council Member representing Senate. He was elected to this position at the 75th Senate meeting on 26th October 2023. He holds B.A. in Qur'an and Hadith Studies (2002) of OIC Islamic University in Niger Republic, M. A. Islamic Studies (2007) of University of Jos and PhD Islamic Studies (2014) of Bayero University Kano. He worked with the Nasarawa State University Keffi, Nasarawa State where he rose through the ranks from Graduate Assistance to Senior Lecturer (2004-2019) before transferring his service to Federal University of Lafia as an Associate Professor (2019). He has taught Qur'an and Hadith and other related courses in the last twenty (20) years of his University teaching experience and has to his credit many publications including two (2) books, twenty-nine (29) Journal articles in reputable national and international journals, four (4) chapters in Books, eight (8) articles in edited conference proceedings and articles in newspapers. He served as Editor for many journals and conference proceedings. He had supervised many undergraduate projects, M.A. Dissertations and Ph.D Theses. He is currently supervising PhD theses at the Nasarawa State University Keffi where he serves as Visiting Professor. He held many administrative positions, membership of committees at Departmental, Faculty, Senate and University levels. He is currently the Chief Imam of Federal University of Lafia, Chairman, Nigeria Association of Teachers of Arabic and Islamic Studies (NATAIS), Nasarawa State Branch. He is also a member of the Union of African Muslim Scholars, Nigerian Qur'anic Society (NQS) and Academic Society for Arabic Language and Literature in Nigeria (ASALLIN).

Admission Requirements
Requirements for admission:
The admission requirements into the B.A. Islamic Studies programme are as follows:

i. Candidates seeking admission through JAMB UTME- 100 Level, must have the minimum UTME score and must have five credit passes in English, Mathematics, Islamic Studies and any other relevant subjects at O’Level WAEC/NECO SSCE, SISCE NBAIS, NABTEB or its equivalent at not more than two sittings.
ii. Candidates seeking admission through JAMB Direct Entry – 200 Level should possess the following:
i. Five credit passes in English, Mathematics, Islamic Studies and any other relevant subjects at O’Level WAEC/NECO SSCE, SISCE, SAISSCE (NBAIS), NABTEB or its equivalent at not more than two sittings. And,
ii. Two Credit passes at General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level in Islamic Studies and any other relevant subjects. Or,
iii. Eight (8) points in IJMB examination in relevant subjects. Or,
iv. NCE at credit or merit level in relevant subjects. Or,
v. National diploma (ND) or any recognized diploma at minimum of lower credit in relevant subjects.
