The Vice-Chancellor of Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), Professor Shehu Abdul Rahman, has restated determination of his administration to train and re-train staff to improve their productivity.
Abdul Rahman spoke when he declared open a four-day training workshop organised by the Directorate of Linkages and Advancement (D&LA) at the Adamu Adamu Lecture and Office Complex, Permanent Site Campus.
The trainings, organised for teaching and non-teaching staff of the University, were organised to enhance staff productivity with a view to realising the dream of the vice-chancellor to make FULafia among the five best universities in Africa
The vice-chancellor, who was represented at the opening ceremony of the trainings by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Idris O. O. Amali, said that staff needed to be continuously trained, commending the organisers of the trainings for their actions.
He pointed out that the trainings would significantly help staff to understand their work schedule and execute their mandate professionally.
Abdul Rahman, who harped on the importance of training as the backbone of any organisation, charged the participants to view their training as a means of improving their skills for optimal productivity.
In his remarks, the Director of D. L. & A., Prof. Malam Al-Bishak, who appreciated the support of the vice-chancellor to the success of the training programmes, described staff training and retraining exercises among the cardinal programmes of Prof. Shehu Abdul Rahman, whose dream is to make the University one of the best in Africa.
While enjoining the participants to take the training seriously and put to use all they would learn during the training, he commended the resource persons for their commitment to the success of the training.
He urged the participants to take advantage of the training to enhance their productivity.
Earlier, in her remarks, the Head of Staff Productivity Promotion Unit of the D. L. & A., Deputy Registrar, Mrs. Helen Bello, stated that the workshop was apt given the important role of the staff in the academia and administration of the University.
Mrs. Bello said: “The University must be manned by personnel who have appropriate skills and expertise in the system and it is in recognition of this that this workshop is organised for different cadres of staff.”
The deputy registrar pointed out that the main purpose of the training programme was to acquaint the old staff with the best practices that can enhance their performance and provide the new workers with the relevant skills to be able to discharge their duties effectively and efficiently.
The training workshop was facilitated by resource persons drawn from various departments in the academia and administration within the University.
The resource persons includesd the Registrar, Dr. Abubakar Mamuda, who presented a paper on the administrative procedures and channels of communication within the University; Dean, Faculty of Education, Professor Mrs Josephine Egbor Odey, who lectured on the processes to enhance quality teaching; Professor Moses U. Ikoh, the Director, Academic Planning, who deliverered a paper on the preparation and application of marking schemes; Dr. Hassan Imam, the Dean, Students Affairs, who presented a paper on understanding students as potential resources for the University; Dr. Ilemona Adofu, Director, Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies, who lectured on academic staff productivity and regularity at work, students/lecturers class attendance, organising test and continuous assessment and Dr. Godwin Dakogol, the Principal Medical Officer II, who deliverered a paper on the strategies for managing stress.
Others were Dr Stephen Uvara, a former bursar, who lectured on financial regulations and fiscal responsibility.
Another presentation was made on work ethics and value re-orientation in the university, by Mr Simeon O. Onah, the Deputy Registrar, Sports Directorate.
Also in attendance at the evets was the University Librarian, Dr. Abiodum Iyoro.
