FULafia gets new Physics Dept
|By Abubakar Ibrahim
If arrangements go according to the plan, and it appears they will, soon, a new structure would be erected to house the Physics Department of the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia).
The structure would be built by the Petroleum Technology Development Funds (PTDF), at the Permanent Site Campus of FULafia.
The PTDF is a special purpose Fund to train and make available skilled, competent and qualified local manpower for the oil and gas industry but it is also involved in developing and upgrading local institutions that are used in providing training and education to Nigerians to make them competent, capable and skilled to participate actively in the industry.
Through research and adaptation of technology, the PTDF strives to promote processes for the development of material input required by the industry using local raw materials and indigenous researchers.
The Vice-Chancellor of FULafia, Professor Shehu Abdul Rahman, while welcoming a team of consultants from the PTDF in the Senate Chamber of the University, praised the PTDF for the “it’s playing in the process of development of institutions of learning in Nigeria.”
He, especially, thanked the organisation for its plan to provide the department of physics with a new structure, saying that the existing structure was inadequate for the department.
Abdul Rahman, however, called for more support for the University from the PTDF, mentioning, specifically, that the state of ICT in FULafia needed to be upgraded.
“As you move around FULafia campuses, you will notice other areas where the assistance of the PTDF will be highly appreciated,” he said to the members of the PTDF team, adding: “Please, don’t hesitate to recommend to your organisation to help the University.”
Earlier, stating the purpose of their visit to FULafia, the leader of the PTDF team, Bem Max Nomor, said they came to inspect the site earmarked for building of the physics department.
She said that they were in FULafia to physically examine the site with a view to making technical recommendations to the PTDF on the soon-to-be started building.
She stated that the building project was part of the university upgrade project of the PTDF.
The members of the team were led by the Dean of Faculty of Science, Dr Nasirudeen Baba, to examine the allocated site for the building.
Baba also took the members round the faculty of science and, especially, the physics department where the members thoroughly examined, with a view to knowing the facilities and items needed for the new building.
