|By Paulinus Auta
As the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) prepares to put in place a Student Union Government (SUG) to pilot students activities in the University, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shehu Abdul Rahman, has called on the would-be students’ leaders to be effective.
The vice-chancellor made the call when he declared open a one-day interactive session/seminar organised for students leaders of the University.
The event which had officials of SRC, SIC, and representatives of faculties, departments, religious, state, tribal associations and clubs, took place at the Management Information System Hall, Permanent Site Campus of the University.
Abdul Rahman noted that leadership crises can arise when leaders do not have the right tools to help them lead effectively, saying that training, in this regard, cannot be overemphasised.
He said that leaders without the necessary tools to lead may not be able to make good decisions or understand complex situations, adding that as the University prepares to put in place the SUG, there was the need to equip leaders.
Abdul Rahman commended the Students Representative Council (SRC), the Students Integrity Club (SIC) and all other categories of students leaders in the University for cooperating with the Management of the University to provide effective learning environment for the students.
The vice-chancellor who also presented a lecture titled: “Bake and Eat the Cake of Wisdom in Preparation of Leadership Position,” said that in the University, training is not just about acquiring knowledge but also helping students gain wisdom and intelligence that would help them in decision-making.
He encouraged the students to develop ideas and values to become good people and leaders.
Speaking earlier, the chairman of the organising committee of the event, Dr Amos Idzi Ambo, thanked the vice-chancellor for appointing them to ensure that the event was successful.
He thanked the principal officers, deans, directors, heads of departments, and students for attending the event, saying it was the first of its kind in the University.
During the interactive session, the SRC President, Comrade Idris Shauibu, SIC President, Maimunat Eleojo, and representatives of the religious bodies in the University commended the vice-chancellor for his exceptional leadership qualities and love for the students, calling on him not to relent in his efforts to provide conducive learning environment for them.
In their separate remarks at the event, the Registrar of the University, Nuradeen Abdu, University Librarian, Prof. Abiodun Iyoro, Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences, Prof. Mohammed Kida, Deputy Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Abdulrazak Abdul Rahman, Director, Environmental Safety, Wing Commander Mohamed Umar Awe (rtd) and Head of Department Theatre and Media Arts, Dr. Comfort Ukwela, all commended the students for their exemplary conducts and supporting the Management of the University.
