FULafia V-C visits MLSCN, seeks collaboration

The Vice-chancellor, Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), Prof. Shehu Abdul Rahman, has described the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) as critical partner of the University.


He praised the MLSCN for remaining consistent in its functions of regulating the training of scientists, technicians and assistants in institutions in Nigeria, saying that FULafia, too, "needs to benefit from the expertise the Council."


The vice-chancellor stated this when he visited the headquarters of the MLSCN in Abuja, recently.


Prof. Abdul Rahman said he was at the MLSCN office to discuss areas of collaboration preparatory to the council members visit to the University for accreditation of the medical laboratory science programme.


He said that FULafia has, recently, got interim accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC) for the MLS programme, calling on the officials from the MLSCN to visit the University for assessment of facilities.


Receiving the vice-chancellor in his office, 

Dr. Tosan Erhabor, the Registrar/Chief Executive Officer, Medical Laboratory Science Council Of Nigeria (MLSCN), expressed his appreciation to the vice-chancellor for the visit.


He said that the MLSCN was ready to collaborate with FULafia to ensure the success and smooth running of the MLS programme in the University.


Those who accompanied the vice-chancellor to the visit included the Provost, College of Medicine, Prof. Ahmed Yakubu Ashuku, and the HOD, Medical Laboratory Science, Dr Surajudeen Junaid.


The Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) is a Federal Government Statutory Regulatory Agency established by Act 11 of 2003.


The council is responsible for regulating the practice of medical laboratory science in Nigeria, determining, from time to time, the standard of knowledge and skills to be attained by persons seeking to become medical laboratory scientists, medical laboratory technicians and medical laboratory assistants (referred to as “scientists’, ‘technicians’ and ‘assistants’), regulate the training of scientists, technicians and assistants in any institutions in Nigeria and give periodic accreditation to institutions.


Other functions include provision and maintaining separate register for scientists, technicians and assistants, regulate the production, importation, sales and stocking of diagnostic laboratory reagents and chemicals; assess, evaluate and register foreign graduates of medical laboratory science, to conduct examinations for technicians and assistants, inspect regulate and accredit medical laboratories and to perform such other functions as may be conferred on it by the Act.
