The Women Leader of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) Branch, Comrade Becky Kajo, has inaugurated the SSANU Women Acton Advisory Group (SWAAG), saying that her action was intended to make women active participants in the affairs of FULafia.

The women leader spoke during the inauguration and first meeting of the SSANU Women Forum held at the FULafia Auditorium, Take-off Site Campus, recently.

Comrade Becky noted that the national body of SSANU mandated branches to inaugurate women’s forum to address issues affecting women in universities.

The women leader said that the meeting was called to “set the tone for the work women are doing and to chat a roadmap towards achieving the goals of women through the forum.”

Becky, while lamenting the marginalisation and relegation of women to the background, expressed her hope that with SWAAG Committee in place, “we can effectively network, share our problems and see how we can address issues affecting the interests of women in FULafia.”

She called on women to rise above any form of discouragement and work hard to make difference in their work, saying: “We will be having a weekly women exercise and other programmes to address issues that affect us.”

The SSANU Chairman, FULafia Chapter, comrade Daniel Dajen, speaking at the event, said that “considering the numerous challenges women face, a forum of this nature will sensitise the people to what these issues are and encourage women to be strong, and not to give up.”

According to him, women “have a lot to contribute to the society, FULafia and the nation large,” promising that “SSANU would do all that is required to assist the forum in its workings and activities.”

Also speaking at the event, the chairperson of the SWAAG, Helen Bello, commended the initiative of the women leader for organising FULafia women forum, encouraging women to push their agenda through motivation, sensitisation and creation of adequate awareness among women in FULafia.
