A team of researchers, led by the Principal Investigator, Dr Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu of the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), has been granted the sum of N25 million by the Tertiary Education Trust (TETFund) to undertake a research.

Aliyu is the Director, Muhammadu Buhari TETFund Centre of Excellence, based in the Federal University of Lafia.

The research is titled: “Fabrication of new glass series from rice-husk and bismuth-tin ores for application in radiation shielding.”

The purpose of the research is to fabricate Bismuth-tinglass series from locally sourced environmental waste (rice-husk) that has high X-rays and gamma rays attenuation for potential applications in radiation shielding.

A letter of appreciation signed by the Vice-Chancellor of FULafia, Prof. Shehu Abdul Rahman, and the Principal Investigator, Dr Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, and sent to the TETFund, said: “We appreciate the Fund for finding our research worthy of funding after subjecting the proposal through a rigorous peer review and budget defense process.”

The letter said that the researchers were committed “to strictly adhere to all laid down rules governing the TETFund NRF Grant award.”

Other researchers involved in the project include Dr Umar Sa’ad, Co-Investigator, FULafia; immediate past vice-chancellor of FULafia, Prof. Muhammad Sanusi Liman; Dr Dlama Zira, FULafia and Dr Abdulkarim Muhammad Hamza, National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure, Abuja.

Others are Dr Bemgba Bevan Nyakuma, Benue State University, Makurdi, Prof. Umar Ibrahim Gaya, National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure, Abuja, and Dr Muhammad Muktar Liman, Nelson Mandela University, South Africa.

Abdul Rahman has congratulated the researchers for winning the research grant, saying that the development would improve the image of FULafia.
