Plant Genetics, Breeding and Biotechnology


Prof. Emmanuel Hala Kwon-Ndung, a Professor of Plant Genetics and Breeding has a training in Botany, Genetics and Breeding and Plant Biotechnology as well as Project Management and Human Resources Management from Nigeria and abroad. He has significantly contributed in building capacity in the Nigeria's National Agricultural Research systems and the University system. He has worked as a Research Officer at the National Cereals Research Institute where he rose to the rank of a Chief Research Officer before withdrawing his servcies to the Nasarawa State University, Keffi. He has collaborated strongly with International Research and Development Agencies and won research grants from the World bank, IPGRI (Bioversity International), IAEA, CTA, UNESCO, FAO and GFU. He is a winner of TWAS postdoctoral fellowship and is a well-travelled scientist who has equally published widely in International peer-reviewed scientific journals. His novel research on using mutation breeding to select resistant variants to the dreaded disease of smut in sugarcane led to release of three indigenous smut resistant industrial sugarcane varieties for commercial cultivation in Nigeria. He has supervised at present 9 Ph.Ds and over 37 M.Scs and is on the Editorial Board of many peer-reviewed academic Journals from different parts of the world as well as serving as a reviewer to several others. His current research focus is on breeding of NUS (neglected and underutilised species), prominent among which is Acha (Fonio) and Finger millet. This he does with passion and he considers it as very promising and keys into his vision of using science to tame global food insecurity. He has held many academic responsibilities as Head of Research Stations, Research programme leader, Head of Deparment, Dean, Chairman, Committeee of Deans and Directors and member of University Governing Council. He has served as Chairman and member of several University adhoc and statutory committees. He has served and still serving is a resource person to the NUC and many MDAs. He chaired the Biotechnology sub-committee of the current National Science Policy. He is currently the National President of the Genetics Society of Nigeria and he is happily married with children.
