The Head of Anti-Corruption Transparency Monitoring Unit, Federal University Lafia (FULafia), Mr. Ozomata Bashir, has described corruption as a disease which has negatively affected the society and the education sector in particular.
However, Bashir said that the management of Federal University Lafia under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Muhammad Sanusi Liman, was ready to fight corruption in all its ramifications and defeat it comprehensively. He praised Liman for his zero-tolerance policy on corruption since he assumed office as the Vice Chancellor, last year.
Bashir spoke during the ended students orientation exercise organised for new students at the university’s Take-off Site Campus, Lafia. The title of his speech is “Promoting Integrity and Eradicating Corruption in Federal University Lafia.” He lamented that corruption, if allowed to persist, “erodes people’s trust, entrench maladministration and dethrones an ideal order of the day.” Bashir said that “corruption is synonymous with lack of ethical standard, transparency and accountability,” adding that it “distorts processes, procedures and government policy.”
Bashir said that the task of promoting integrity and eradicating the menace of corruption in the university and elsewhere was not sole responsibility of anti- corruption agencies, calling on everyone to join the crusade.
“Students and staff of this noble institution must inculcate and display the ethical values of integrity, transparency, accountability and say no to corruption in Federal University Lafia.”
He called on staffers and students to report all suspected cases of corruption to ACTU in Room AG 06, Administration Block in the permanent site of the university.
In its bid to continuously improve access to quality education and satisfy peoples’ desire for knowledge, Federal University Lafia (FULafia) has established a school of postgraduate studies, which is now set to admit students into programmes.
The school ofpostgraduate studies has recently conducted pre-qualifying examinations for prospective students into various postgraduate programmes to mark the commencement of the 2016/2017 academic session. About 400 prospective students applied for admission into the school.
The postgraduate programmes, 14 in number, are situated in eight departments of the university’s three faculties of science, social sciences and arts. Speaking on the development, the Dean, Postgraduate School, Prof. Sam Obadiah Smah, said facilities for were provided for conducive teaching and learning of students.
The newly introduced programmes are, postgraduate diploma in environmental resource management, M.Sc. chemistry, M.Phil/Ph.D chemistry with special interest in analytical chemistry and physical chemistry; M.Sc. microbiology and M.Phil./Ph.D microbiology with special interest in biomedical microbiology; M.Sc. zoology and M.Phil./Ph.D zoology with special interest in applied parasitology and entomology postgraduate diploma in botany, M.Sc. botany and M.Phil./Ph.D. botany with special interest in plant diversity management, horticulture and nursery management, plant breeding and genetics ecology; M.A history and international studies, M.Phil./Ph.D history and international studies with special interest in economic history, international studies, social and political history.
Others include, M.Sc. economics and M.Phil./Ph.D economics with special interest in monetary economics, public finance and policy, international economics, developmental economics; M.Sc. sociology with specialization in demography and population studies, industrial sociology, social anthropology, rural sociology, medical sociology, gender studies, criminology and sociology of law and sociology of development; M.Phil./Ph.D sociology with specialisation in medical sociology, gender studies, criminology and sociology of law, sociology of development; M.Sc. political science with specialisation in political philosophy/ theory, comparative politics and political economy, M.Sc. international relations and diplomacy, masters in peace and conflict studies (MPCS), M.Phil/Ph.D. political science with interest in comparative politics, political economy, public administration and local government.

The outgoing Registrar, Federal University Lafia (FULafia), Dr Idris Othman Jibrin, has called on members of the university’s community to embrace the virtues of hard work and diligence to excel in life.
Jibrin made the call when staffers from Nasarawa and Keffi Local Governments hosted him to a send forth ceremony at Sandaji Chalets, B Division Road, Lafia.
The outgoing Registrar, whose tenure ends February 16, 2017, expressed his happiness with the honour done him by the association, attributing his elevation in life to diligence.
While thanking the entire University community for the support and cooperation accorded him during his tenure, he urged them to extend same to his successor.
Speaking earlier, Dr. Mamuda Abubakar, the Deputy Registrar, Council Affairs of FULafia, who presented a gift to the outgoing Registrar, Dr Idris Othman Jibrin, on behalf of the association, described Jibrin as an outstanding fellow whose contributions to the development of FULafia cannot be quantified. He wished him well in his future endeavours.
Among the dignitaries at the occasion were Deputy Registrar, establishments, Dr Ahmad Abubakar, and Deputy Director of Internal Audit, Adamu Kuyanbana.
Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Federal University Lafia Chapter, held its election on February 8, 2017, to elect new executives to run its affairs.
Comrade Monday Sarki, a Quantity Surveyor from Physical Planning Unit, emerged as the Chairman in a keenly contested election.
Mr. Friday Agi of Audit Unit emerged the Vice Chairman, while Comrade Bazam Abubakar emerged secretary.
Other winners are Comrade Mustafa Kabir (Assistant Secretary); Comrade Daniel Dajen (Treasurer); Comrade Valentina Esekhaigbe (Financial Secretary); Comrade Angelina Tyem (Woman Leader); Comrade Jonas Obi (Trustee); Comrade Paulinus Auta (PRO) and Comrade Abubakar Mamuda (Ex-Officio).
The Registrar, Federal University Lafia (FULafia), Dr. Idris O. Othman, has called on staff to adhere strictly to the university’s core values of integrity, innovations and excellence.
Idris, who stated this while speaking to FULafia Bulletin at his office, disclosed that his success as a University administration manifested in his ability to make workers embrace the university’s core values and made them serve as their guiding principles of operations.
He said: “Right from inception, we have tried to set and maintain standard in terms of building self esteem of administrative staff through engaging them to University activities at committee level. We train and retrain staff so that their orientation and attitude would fit into what we expect of the university’s staff.
“Compared with workers in other universities, our staffers have come a long way in achieving our university’s core values, especially in terms of appearance, attitude and job performance. But we were not there yet. There is need for improvement, specifically in the area of minutes writing and production.”
He pointed out that how the recent university’s employment scam in FULafia was handled by its administrators had portrayed their dexterity in handling crisis situation.
“Above all,” he said, “the Management has shown that FULafia is not ready to compromise on its values and standard. It clearly showed that the University is out to curtail all forms of vices.”
He advised members of staff not to compromise their integrity and work hard to develop the budding University.
For students who may wish to offer money and or sex for marks, Federal University Lafia (FULafia) is the wrong place for them to be and study, said the Vice Chancellor.
Speaking during the recently held 2016/2017 matriculation exercise at the University’s Take-Off Campus in Lafia, Vice Chancellor, Professor Muhammad Sanusi Liman also warned students to shun anti-social behaviours such as cultism and drugs addiction and take advantage of “our university’s learning and extra-curricular facilities to develop themselves”.
He said to the students that it was only by dedicating themselves to their books that they would reap the benefit of their stay in FULafia. He said: “By doing so, you make your stay in the University meaningful and useful to your academic careers and a source of satisfaction and pride to your parents and guardians as well as the country as a whole”.
Prof. Liman revealed that plan were underway to establish new faculties and programmes in the fields of education, management, environmental and medical sciences and engineering at the university. He called on matriculating students to work hard and abide the university’s rules and regulations.
“I call on you to dedicate your time to your books, despise habit of tweeting and posting on social media, to make worthwhile your stay at FULafia.”
The Vice Chancellor saluted parents for their sacrifice which he said had enabled students “to witness this momentous day in their academic development.”
During the annual exercise, about 1, 500 students took their oath of matriculation.
The Federal University Lafia (FULafia) Health Centre in collaboration with Nasarawa State Ministry of Health celebrated the 2016 World Malaria Day with the theme: “End Malaria for good.”
The event, which featured paper presentations from medical personnel and others from outside the university, called for eradication of the disease from the face of the earth. Dr. Francis Bala Aku of the Nasarawa State Malaria Action Programmes (MAPs), in his lecture titled: “The need to combine effort and fight malaria in Nasarawa State,” described malaria as an economic scourge which effects were affecting the productivity of workers and, consequently, the socio-economic development of Nasarawa State.\
He pointed out that epidemic control, coordination and monitoring and evaluation of research would go a long way in combating malaria.
The Medical Director of FULafia, Dr. Agunede Sunday, in his welcome addressed, said the collaboration came at the time the state needed to end the scourge of malaria, adding that FULafia would always support the fight against malaria.
The Vice-Chancellor of FULafia, Prof. Muhammad Sanusi Liman, has appointed Dr. Kyegh Avo Thaddeus as Dean of Students’ Affairs Division.
Kyegh became the first full-time FULafia staffer to head the division as others who headed it were workers on sabbatical to FULafia from other universities.
The Student’s Affairs Division was established to prepare students on campus to successfully earn their career goal in life.
The division orientates students on effective study habit and coping with challenges after graduation, enlightens them on repercussion of examination misconduct and managing emotions for peak performance.
Speaking, Kyegh stated that the division had mobilised 119 pioneer students for the National Youth Service Corps, Batch B 2016, which was in line with the mandate of creating opportunities to students to realise and develop their potentials.
The members of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) condoled with the Registrar, Federal University Lafia (FULafia), Dr Idris Jibrin, on the demise of his mother, Hajiya Karima Idris.
The Chairman of SSANU, Dr Mamuda Abubakar, who led his members, visited family of the deceased woman in the ancient city of Keffi, Nasarawa State, where members of the body and other people prayed God to grant Hajiya Karima eternal rest and the family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
The association’s chairman, who spoke Mrs Helen Bello, the Deputy Registrar and Coordinator, Advancement Unit, FULafia, urged family members of the deceased woman to take solace in the good life that the late Hajiya Karima lived, noting that, “she left her footprint in the sand of time.”
Receiving the delegation on behalf of the family, Ibrahim Abdul Usman thanked the association for the visit, saying that the late Hajiya Karima would be remembered as a good mother and mentor.
He prayed God to strengthen the relationship between the association and the family.
In a related development, The Association of Nigerian University Professional Administrators (ANUPA), Federal University Lafia (FULafia) Branch, and the Special Marshal, Unit 7, were also at the residence of the deceased woman to condole with her family.
The Faculty of Social Science has recently launched its maiden journal, known as the Faculty of Social Science Journal.
The launching ceremony of the journal had in attendance the Vice-Chancellor of FULafia, Prof. Muhammed Sanusi Liman, who was represented by the Director, Centre for General Studies, Professor Idris Amali, all Heads of Departments and the book reviewers.
The journal, the faculty said, would be committed to the study of cultural and social issues ranging from the local, national to the global.
The publication of journal was counted among the many achievements of the outgoing Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Sam Smah, whose tenure would end in March 2017.
In another development, the Faculty of Social Sciences, Federal University Lafia (FULafia), has approved students’ handbook containing rules and regulation governing students conduct in the Faculty.
While endorsing the handbook as an official document, the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Sam Smah, stated that the handbook provides general information and guidance to help the students make better use of the opportunities offered them in the Faculty.
He said that both staff and students shared the responsibility for upholding the faculty’s standards.
The handbook would be distributed to students in departments of sociology, social works, economics and political science which formed the Faculty of Social Sciences.
