The programme has been designed to provide a sound understanding of the concepts and methodologies of Zoology in key areas that meet the society’s needs. The main objectives of the programme are to broadly educate students for positions in the conservation and biodiversity sectors, and to prepare them for graduate and professional studies in the animal sciences at the molecular level.  

Employment and Career opportunities available to graduates of the Department

During the period of the four-year degree programme, students are exposed to basic biology, parasitology, entomology, physiology, ecology, wildlife and fisheries. The courses are designed to meet the present day demands of current employment market. Degree in zoology puts the student in the fore front for a job in areas of Health, Safety and Environmental Management, Conservation Pest Management, Fisheries, Parasitology (prevention and control of diseases) and Oil Exploration.   

Admission and Graduation Requirement  

 - UTME 

The entry requirements shall be at least credit level passes in five subjects including English Language, Mathematics, to form the core subjects with credit in three other relevant science courses Biology, Chemistry and Physics at the Senior Secondary School Certificate or its equivalent. In addition, an acceptable pass in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) into 100-level is required.   

 - Direct Entry

Candidates with two A level passes (graded A-E) at the Advanced Level in one or more relevant subjects (Biology, Botany, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics) may undertake the three – year degree programme into 200-level.  

Learning Outcomes  

All Bachelors Honours degree student in Zoology are expected to develop the following abilities and skills:  

  • Regime of Subject Knowledge Cognitive abilities and skills relating to solution of problems in  Zoology
  • Competencies and Skills  Practical skills relating to the conduct of Laboratory and Field work in Zoology
  • Behavioral Attitudes General skills relating to non-subject specific competencies, communication, interpersonal, organization skills.
